Genetics Reveals Paternity Fraud

Up until now the scale of "paternity fraud" has gone without anyone really aware of the scale. Now the NHS has revealed that it could be as high as one in ten.

Routine testing for hereditary diseases has started to reveal the scale of the problem. Our health is in part determined by the genes inherited from our parents. That is one of the reasons that doctors record family history. Yet as many as one in ten of those "family histories could be wrong.

This has consequences for how doctors treat us - are we really at high risk of breast cancer or not? The resourcesof the NHS are to some extent deployed according to risk. Yet when our family tree isn't our family tree those resources can be misdirected.

The problem is becoming more widespread with the interest in anscestry and our genetic heritage. While the NHS does not currently reveal "paternity fraud" to patients. Genetic tests paid forby the client can.
