Mutation
Mutation is believed to be the source of our genetic code. I say believed because there is no evidence of really new information being written by mutation. Additional copies of a gene are just that, aditional copies. Likewise damaged copies of a gene are just that damaged copies. Mutations are very good at damaging the gene pool they do not add 'de facto, new genetic information.

Adding to the Gene Pool Controversy
This was the question an Australian camera crew asked Richard Dawkins. "Give an example of a genetic mutation or an evolutionary process which can be seen to increase the information in the genome"

There was no straight forward answer to this question and Dawkins claims to have rumbled that he was being interviewed by Creationists because, "It is the kind of question only a creationist would ask in that way". In all fairness it is a question that begs an answer, irrespective of who asks it. It cuts through the fog of gene duplication, damaged genes and asks for a genuinely new gene as evidence. That Dawkins felt trapped by the question is precicely because it has not been addressed -it is basic evolution 101.
